Valentine’s Day



In Japan, Valentine’s Day is a day which girls gives chocolates and says love to boys. It is a custom only Japan. I think I will write about Valentine’s Day.


The origin of Valentine’s Day was Juno’s birthday in Rome. Juno is the queen of gods and goddess and she is a goddess of marriage and home on Roman myth. The next day was the festival of harvest. In the festival, men draw lots. The lot was written names of women. They should be with each other during the festival. The couples fell in love almost. The emperor Marcus Aurelius Claudius Ⅱ banned marriages of soldiers because if they leave their lovers in the country, their fighting spirits were failing down. Valentinus the priest allowed their marriage secretly. The priest was executed by the emperor at Feb. 14. It is reason that the Valentine’s Day is called “Lover’s Day”

In America, people give flower, cake, or card to own sweet hearts. It has no relation with sex. There is not White Day like Japan. Chocolates are bought for presents at Feb. 14. This custom came in Japan.

In time of before World War Ⅱ, Valentine’s Day was came in Japan by foreign people. Confectionery companies speeded the custom for sales result. Ordinary, women give some chocolate or present to men in Japanese Valentine’s Day. It is unique what women say love to men with a chocolate in Japan. In other countries, the sender is men almost.
